PJT Preview: Tranmere Rovers vs Leeds United U21

A look ahead to Tuesday's clash.

Michael Skubala takes his Leeds United Under-21s side to face Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday evening in the Papa John’s Trophy (19:00 kick-off).

The Whites begin their trophy campaign by facing off at Prenton Park against Sky Bet League Two opposition, in Northern Group B.

Micky Mellon’s side have already played once in the group, drawing 2-2 against League One side Bolton Wanderers, but they did pick up the bonus point after winning the resulting penalty shoot-out.

All matches have to have a winner on the night, with a penalty shoot-out deciding who is awarded an extra point should the 90 minutes end in a draw. Every team in the group plays each other once.

The other side in Group B is Crewe Alexandra, who have also played just the once, losing against table-topping Bolton.

All three of Leeds’ matches will be played away from home at this stage of the competition, with home games only being introduced for Under-21 teams in the knock-out phase of the trophy.

What Michael Skubala has said, ahead of the match:

“It will be a really tough test. It’s a different kind of test because it’s the Papa John’s Trophy and Tranmere are a league club. We’re looking forward to it, the young lads are looking forward to the challenge. We’re in a good place, the group is in a good place, so hopefully we can put on a good show.”
