Speaking ahead of Friday night’s Premier League 2 Division 2 clash with Southampton at Elland Road, Michael Skubala shared his thoughts.

Our Under-21s head coach was asked about the match itself and also his team selection, with senior players set to be involved, along with a debut coming up for exciting young forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Skubala explained: “Sometimes these opportunities come around in football.

“They come from places like seeing games being called off, then it allows the fans to maybe come and see some of the players that they wouldn't expect.

“We know the number of tickets that have been sold is absolutely amazing. This club supports all the young pathway as well as the senior players, so it's going to be a good occasion.

“As part of the development team, my role is to support the first team whenever we can. Even though my role is to look after the development of the youth players and the young players, having some of the senior pros come in and play is really good for young players.

“It's good for the young players to play with the likes of Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling. So all in all, it's about making the most of the experience and winning the game.

“I'm also really looking forward to working with Willy Gnonto. He's a really good character already to have around the building and has experiences already for such a young player.

“He's one of those players that I hope the fans will get behind and see the excitement that he can bring to Leeds United. It’s another good opportunity to have a young talent come into the club.”

On the match itself, both teams come into the game with identical records of three wins and one draw in their opening four matches. Skubala is aware of the challenge facing his side.

“In Southampton, we know this will be a tough game,” the Under-21s head coach stated.

“They will be competitive, they have started really well in the league. I think we've done well up to this point in having good performances, so I think it's a really good game to come and watch.

“When we when we talk about the Under-21s, it is a competitive league. There are good players and at this level with young good pros or senior pros, there is no easy game.

“You want to see the top two or three play, so I think it's going to be a really good game.”
