U23s Preview: Brighton & Hove Albion vs Leeds United

Premier League 2 action.

Andy Taylor’s Under-23s side are travelling away from home on Friday afternoon, taking on Brighton & Hove Albion in this Premier League 2 Division One clash.

After 23 games of the 26 match campaign, the Whites are 11th in the table, level on points with 12th placed Everton and four ahead of 13th placed Chelsea - but the Blues do have a game in hand.

Brighton are currently in 9th place, one point ahead of 10th placed Blackburn and four points in front of the Whites. A fascinating end to the season awaits, with plenty of teams still battling for position in this tightly contested league.

When Leeds met the Seagulls at the LNER Community Stadium (York) in October, a hard-fought clash between two teams looking for the win ended level. Joe Snowdon struck an excellent opener in the game, before Lorent Tolaj responded late on for the visitors.

Taylor’s side have three matches left of the season and will be looking for a strong finish. Three points on Friday against Brighton would be important in the battle for safety, and a win could take the Whites above 10th placed Blackburn on goal difference. Friday evening will also see Chelsea and Everton face off against each other, whilst Blackburn will play away from home against 8th placed Leicester City.

Coming into the game, Leeds have lost just the one out of their previous five matches, which was away at Chelsea. Three impressive home wins on the bounce against Liverpool, Manchester United and most recently Crystal Palace have seen 10 goals scored without reply, whilst the draw was an entertaining clash away at Tottenham.

The Seagulls have won their last two on home turf, in impressive style. They netted four times in the win over Everton, then followed that up with a five goal success against bottom of the table Derby. Prior to those wins, Andrew Crofts side had been on a six game run without a win.

The top-scorers on each side have eight goals each for the season, up to this point. Sam Greenwood is leading the way for Leeds, whilst 17-year-old Evan Ferguson is one of the main threats for the Seagulls.

The match is being played behind-closed-doors at Brighton’s training ground, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm. Supporters are able to watch the match live through LUTV.
