U23s Preview: Blackburn Rovers vs Leeds United

Premier League 2 action for the Whites.

Mark Jackson’s Under-23s are taking on Blackburn Rovers away from home on Monday night (19:00), in their latest Premier League 2 Division One clash.

The Whites are returning to familiar surroundings with the match being played at the Leyland County Ground, the home of the Lancashire FA, after winning there recently against Wigan Athletic Under-23s in the Premier League Cup.

Jackson’s side come into the game on the back of two impressive victories. The PL Cup win over Wigan was followed up with an important three points at home to Derby County Under-23s. That victory saw Leeds climb out of the bottom two.

Monday night’s match will be another key encounter down the bottom end of the table. Blackburn are bottom of the league, four points behind Leeds. Mike Sheron’s side have a game in hand meaning the positions could all change down there in the coming weeks.

Rovers have won two out of their 16 matches up to this point in PL2. Both of those successes have been away from home and when the two teams met at the LNER Community Stadium back in September, an eight-goal thriller saw each side leave with a point each from the 4-4 draw.

With both teams needing the three points and expected to go all out for the victory, a win for Leeds would see them climb up to ninth place in the table. For the hosts, a first home win of the campaign would lift them off the bottom and closer to the pack just above the dotted line.

The goals of Sam Burns mean he is a player to keep an eye on for the United backline. He has seven for the season, which is a tally matched by both Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood for Leeds.
