Mark Jackson: The players showed good character

Under-23s head coach on Derby victory.

Mark Jackson gave his thoughts to LUTV after seeing his side record back to back victories, with an impressive home win against Derby County.

The battle between the two teams was an important one for league position in this Premier League 2 encounter, and the Whites scored a goal in each half to take the points.

Speaking after the match, Jackson summarised the display and feeling within the team.

“It’s a pleasing win, an important victory for us,” he explained.

“We’re sitting close to the bottom of the table and Derby are in and around us, we knew it was going to be a tough game.

“It was important that we challenged the players to get the three points and they came up trumps, they put a performance in that warranted getting all three.

“I told the players to remember the feeling they had on Friday when we got the victory down at Wigan, remember that and take it into tonight’s game, to make sure we’re feeling like that again.

“They did that and they are certainly feeling positive in there.”

The Whites claimed a clean sheet as well, despite Derby throwing everything forward to try and get back into the game, which is another aspect that pleased the coaching staff.

Jackson said: “We were really pleased with that, it’s something we have been lacking in the first part of the season.

“That understanding of how to see games out and how to manage the game, without compromising what we do.

“I thought the players showed good character towards the end, a couple of players went down with cramp and we were having to defend corners.

“Derby put us under a lot of pressure at times but we stood firm, the boys really enjoyed defending and you could see they enjoyed getting the three points as well.”
