A goal in each half secured Leeds United’s Under-23s a 2-0 victory over Derby County Under-23s and back-to-back wins.

Leeds made a bright start to the match and almost took the lead through Liam McCarron.  The left-back made good ground up the pitch, before striking narrowly wide of the right post.

The Whites were dealt an early injury blow with Stuart McKinstry on the end of a challenge, with Archie Gray replacing him.

Charlie Allen saw a strike well blocked following some decent build up play from the Whites as Mark Jackson’s side continued to press.

Derby’s first chance came in the 20th minute from a free-kick, with both Courtney Clarke and Louie Watson having efforts thwarted by the Leeds defence.

Harvey Sutcliffe tried his luck from range, before Amari Miller dangerously cut into the box from the right flank before firing at goal, seeing his strike superbly blocked.

Max Dean saw a half volley from 25 yards go over the crossbar, whilst at the other end, Isaac Hutchinson got to the byline and teed up Bartosz Cybulski, but he saw his attempt stopped by Kristoffer Klaesson.

Leeds broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, with Miller hitting a fine strike from 25 yards, with his curling effort nestling in the top left corner.

Sean McGurk forced Harrison Foulkes into a stop before the break, as the Whites went in ahead at the interval.

Half time: Leeds United 1-0 Derby County

Leeds almost doubled the lead following the restart, with Dean firing just inches wide from the edge of the box.

Derby could have levelled in the 50th minute when Kornell McDonald found Louie Watson in the box with a low cross, but he could only put a great opportunity over the crossbar.

The Rams again threatened from a free kick moments later, Darren Robinson met Will Grewal-Pollard’s cross with a free header, but saw his attempt deflect just wide.

Leeds’ search for a second almost ended when Dean reached the byline, he cut the ball back for Allen, but the ball was just behind the midfielder, meaning he was unable to get enough power on his strike to beat Foulkes.

Once more Foulkes denied Allen, this time he fired a brilliant effort from 25 yards, which brought out the best of the Derby stopper.

Allen had a great chance in the 73rd minute when he was played in on goal by Sutcliffe, but this time saw his strike cannon down and back out off the crossbar.

With seven minutes of the second half remaining, Allen deservedly got his goal. He was found by Miller with a low ball into the Derby box and his quick shot on the turn found the back of the net.

Derby threw men forward in the closing stages, firing several balls into the box, but the Whites defence held strong, to secure a clean sheet and a vital three points.
