U23s Preview: Leeds United vs Derby County

Premier League 2 action for the Whites.

Mark Jackson’s Under-23s are facing off against Derby County on Monday evening (19:00), in an important Premier League 2 encounter.

The Whites are level on points with with Derby, but sit behind their opponents on goal difference. Both teams go into the game knowing that three points could be hugely important for league position, in this second half of the season.

When the two teams met back in August 2021, an entertaining 3-2 win for Leeds was the outcome at the Loughborough University Stadium after goals from Crysencio Summerville, Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt. This time around, all three are likely to be missing the encounter.

Leeds come into the game having taken three points in the Premier League Cup victory against Wigan Athletic on Friday evening. Two stunning goals from Nohan Kenneh and Max Dean were enough to secure the win, bringing confidence into Monday night’s clash.

However, form at home hasn’t been strong this season, after last year the side went the whole campaign unbeaten. The Whites are still looking to claim their first three points in the league and will be aiming to do just that at York City’s LNER Community Stadium on Monday.

For the Rams, their recent form at Under-23s level has been impressive. Four wins from their last five games in all competitions has seen them go above Jackson’s side in the standings. Five goals in the win at Arsenal was followed up by three at home to Chelsea, and another five against Norwich. They also played on Friday night in the Cup, winning away at Charlton.

Jack Stretton is leading the way on goals scored this season for his side, as he has six. The forward has been involved in a number of first team matches this season and will be a player to keep a close eye on if involved.

A win for Leeds would see them leapfrog both Derby and Leicester City in the league table and in doing so, come out of the bottom two. Derby would also go above the Foxes with three points, and in doing so, further the gap between the bottom two. An interesting encounter awaits.
