Mark Jackson’s U23s side began 2021 in the same way they left 2020, with a convincing victory over their Premier League 2 opponents.

Sam Greenwood got the scoring underway after just 10 minutes, then Crysencio Summerville’s impressive hat-trick secured the three points for the league leaders.

Straight from kick-off the Whites were on the front foot. Niall Huggins could have netted after just three minutes, finding space from Summerville’s clever pass but firing over the bar. That was a warning sign for Burnley, who certainly didn’t realise it at that moment in time.

Stuart McKinstry’s tenth minute corner caused problems in the penalty area. With Burnley unable to clear, the ball fell to Greenwood on the edge of the box and the striker drilled it low and hard, into the back of the net to put his side ahead.

Huggins was continuing to get forward and look dangerous, and Summerville was doing the exact same down the opposite flank. However, Leeds had to remain aware in defence and it took a last-ditch challenge from Charlie Cresswell to deny the hosts a certain equaliser.

Getting his first and the second of the match for his side, Summerville made it two by showing good composure to slot home following Liam McCarron’s run and cross into the box, giving the ‘keeper no chance.

Leeds were now in complete control and extending the scoreline further, never looked far away. It was Summerville once again who would do just that in the 35th minute, finishing off a lovely free-flowing team goal by rounding the ‘keeper and firing into the back of the net for three.

HALF TIME: Burnley 0-3 Leeds United

Burnley made a change during the break, which would impact on the game. They brought on ‘Trialist’ and looked to try and change the scoreline by doing so and getting on the front foot.

It would indeed be the substitute that would reduce the deficit, turning home an in-swinging corner inside the six-yard box. The Leeds players did appeal for what they believed should have been a free-kick, but nothing was given and the hosts had some new found belief.

A second half that was then relatively scrappy saw plenty of stop-start moments, and in truth not as much action as the first. The Clarets were coming forward and looking to put the pressure on but their chances were limited to long-range efforts and set-pieces.

Kris Moore and Max Dean were both given opportunities to enter the match, replacing the hard-working Sam Greenwood and Liam McCarron. Both players looked to settle the game back down and provide Leeds with different options.

With the game approaching its ending, the ever-willing Cody Drameh was the player getting his side up the pitch in search of a fourth. His good work appeared to get that, but the flag went up to deny the Whites as Kamwa fired home.

However, the combination of Drameh and Dean once again down the wing did eventually mean that Summerville could net his hat-trick, by scoring the rebound from substitute Dean’s effort. It was no more than the winger had deserved after an impressive performance throughout the 90 minutes.

Leeds remain top of the Premier League 2 table following another convincing victory, extending their lead to six points.
