Sam Greenwood scored a hat-trick against his former side as Leeds United earned a first Premier League 2 win of the season with a comprehensive victory over Sunderland.

Leeds threatened for the first time inside five minutes when Leif Davis broke down the left flank and into the Sunderland box and his cross found Stuart McKinstry who struck just wide.

Leeds took the lead a minute later, Joe Gelhardt played a lovely through ball to put Sam Greenwood through on goal and he made no mistake.

The Whites nearly doubled the lead when Cody Drameh drove forwards before teeing up McKinstry, but he couldn’t keep his strike down.

Davis again caused Sunderland problems down the left flank and teed up Gelhardt to strike, but he saw his attempt well blocked, before Anthony Patterson saved Jamie Shackleton’s rebound from the edge of the box.

Mateusz Bogusz sent Gelhardt forwards as the Whites continued to press, with the England youth international doing superbly to weave his way into the box and work room for a shot, but he could only find the side netting with his finish.

In the 28th minute Leeds hit Sunderland on the counter-attack following a corner, Shackleton played Greenwood up the pitch and he forced Patterson into a good save from a narrow angle.

Sunderland’s first chance of the game came six minutes later, when Arbenit Xhemajli’s header across the face of goal was met by a header from Sam Wilding, but he was denied by a superb save by Elia Caprile from close range.

Half time: Sunderland 0-1 Leeds United

Leeds introduced Jack Jenkins, Pascal Struijk and Robbie Gotts at the break and it was the latter who almost found Leeds’ second goal.  He was teed up by Gelhardt, but saw his attempt from close range denied.

Gelhardt himself went close to getting on the scoresheet soon after when he worked room for a shot, but he saw his deflected effort hit the crossbar.

Greenwood netted his second goal of the day in the 65th minute.  Gelhardt won a free kick on the edge of the box and Greenwood superbly found the back of the net with his strike at the set-piece.

Greenwood completed his hat-trick four minutes later.  After doing well to get a McKinstry pass under control, he smashed the ball into the roof of the net beyond Patterson.

Gotts struck wide from range as the Whites looked for a fourth, before Sunderland saw a Josh Hawkes strike well saved by Caprile and from the resulting corner Will Harris hit the post.

With six minutes remaining Leeds also went close from a corner, with Oliver Casey seeing his looping header hit the crossbar.

Drameh saw red late on after picking up a second yellow card and Jake Diamond scored from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but the Whites came away with all three points.
