Leeds United’s Under-23s made it three wins in a row with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Thorp Arch.

Sheffield United had the first chance of the game when Leonardo Gaxha broke through on goal, but Illan Meslier made a really good stop to deny him.

Jamie Shackleton tested Blades stopper Michael Verrips, before Robbie Gotts met a Barry Douglas cross at the back post but couldn’t find the target.

Jack Clarke broke forward well for Leeds, before laying the ball off to Mateusz Bogusz who struck a lovely effort from 25 yards, but his attempt went just narrowly wide.

Gotts then got in behind the Blades defence and attempted to lob Verrips, but his chip went just over.

The Whites next went close from a Douglas corner, but Ryan Edmondson could only head straight at the goalkeeper.

Liam McCarron put a decent cross in from the left flank and Clarke headed back across goal, before Douglas had a header of his own well blocked.

On the stroke of half time, Sheffield United were awarded a penalty when Meslier was adjudged to have brought down Reece York following Stephen Mallon’s through ball.  York stepped up to take the spot kick, but Meslier made a superb stop to keep the scores level.

Leeds made three changes at the break with Ezgjan Alioski and Gaetano Berardi introduced, along with Eddie Nketiah who stepped up his comeback from injury.

The Blades made a blistering start to the second period and almost took the lead when Gaxha crossed from the right and Jake Young was inches away from getting his head on it.

Berardi and Nketiah had efforts blocked following a Leeds free kick, before Nketiah broke through on goal, but couldn’t get the better of Verrips from a narrow angle.

The Whites again threatened from another free kick, Alioski delivered from the right and Edmondson glanced a header just wide at the back post.

Leeds took the lead in the 54^th minute, the Blades made an error at the back allowing Edmondson in and he slotted home.

However, the visitors responded straight away to get back on level terms, with Jake Kelly turning in a Stephen Mallon cross.

Sheffield United then went close to taking the lead from a Mallon corner, with York hitting the crossbar with a header.

Leeds regained the lead in the 59^th minute, after winning a free kick 25 yards from goal, Bogusz superbly found the top corner with a splendid strike.

A neat back-heel by Nketiah found Gotts in the Blades box as Leeds pushed for a third, but his deflected shot was well saved.

Nketiah saw a header saved following an Alioski free kick, before being denied by a great block from Ashton Hall after some neat build up with Edmondson and Alioski, as the Whites saw out the win to claim all three points.
