Leeds United made it two wins from two in 2019, thanks to a goal in either half from Izzy Brown.
The Whites went close inside five minutes when Brown teed up Tom Pearce to strike, but he couldn't beat David Richards in the Crewe goal.
Kalvin Phillips saw an effort at a corner deflect wide, before Kun Temenuzhkov had a good chance with the second set-piece, but he fired a volley wide.
Phillips then went close with a strike from 25 yards, with his powerful curling effort clipping the post
At the other end, Crewe hit Leeds on the counter attack and Regan Griffiths was denied by a super save from Will Huffer in the Whites goal.
Richards was again called into action in the Crewe goal, first denying a Brown free-kick and then saving from a Temenuzhkov volley on the edge of the box.
Owen Dale then went close for the visitors, his cross headed towards goal and hit the crossbar, before bouncing over.
On the stroke of half time Leeds took the lead, some good build up play led to Bryce Hosannah getting to the byline, he played the ball across goal and Brown was on hand to convert from close range.
Half time: Leeds United 1-0 Crewe Alexandra
Leeds made two changes at the break with Leif Davis and Robbie Gotts introduced and the latter almost had an immediate impact when Jordan Stevens put a low cross into the box, but he couldn't convert under pressure.
Davis then worked his way forwards, before striking from the edge of the box, but he couldn't keep his effort down.
Crewe had a good chance through Tom Lowery after the ball fell to him following some good play by Griffiths, but he struck wide in a decent position.
Brown, looking for his second goal did well to work space for a shot on the edge of the area, but he was denied by a fine save from Richards.
Bryce Hosannah then struck at goal, Richards made a good save to deny him and from the rebound Temenuzhkov could only head wide from close range.
Gotts then turned well on the edge of the area and fired at goal, his effort was heading for the top corner but for Richards.
Stevens then broke into the Crewe area before seeing his effort cannon off the post as the Whites looked for an all important second goal.
The second goal did come in the 76th minute, Gotts played Davis into the Crewe area and his cut-back was met by a first time strike from Brown, giving Richards no chance.
Gotts struck wide and fellow substitute Ryan Edmondson hit the post late on, as the Whites had to settle for a two goal victory.
