Sheffield Wednesday 2 (Pudil 3, Stobbs pen 89) Leeds United 1 (Sarkic pen 16)
Leeds United Under-23s suffered a cruel defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday, thanks to a late Jack Stobbs penalty.
With the Whites Under-18s in action against Burnley in the FA Youth Cup on Monday evening, head coach Carlos Corberran left out a number of regulars, whilst the Owls named first team stars Daniel Pudil and Marco Matias in their starting line-up.
The home side took the lead inside three minutes, when Pudil’s cross from the left side was caught in the gusty conditions, hit the far post and found the back of the net.
Oliver Sarkic almost hit back when he drove forwards, before firing from 25 yards, but his low effort went just wide.
Leeds won a penalty in the 15th minute when Sarkic was felled in the box by Freddie Nielsen. Sarkic stepped up to take the spot kick and successfully found the bottom right corner to pull Leeds level.
Matias then tested Bailey Peacock-Farrell with an effort from the edge of the box, but he couldn’t beat the Leeds stopper.
The Owls then went close through striker Preslav Borukov, he headed just wide a cross from Pudil.
On the stroke of half time Leeds could have gone ahead, Sarkic broke into the box and his effort deflected just inches wide.
Half Time: Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Leeds United
The home side started the second half brightly, Warren Clarke forced Bailey Peacock-Farrell into a save from the edge of the box, whilst Borukov fired over a Penney cross.
Just before the hour mark Wednesday won a penalty when Broukov was felled in the Leeds box, however Penney hit the post with his attempt, before Leeds cleared.
Sarkic then went close to putting the Whites ahead, with a curling effort from just inside the box, but his effort went just wide.
Bryce Hosannah then drove forward before playing Jack McKay down the right wing, he then returned the ball to Hosannah in the box, who saw an effort denied by Dawson at his near post.
Substitute Eoghan Stokes then saw an effort from the edge of the box go just over the bar, whilst fellow replacement Alex Machuca saw a cross tipped just over the bar.
Leeds had a great chance to win it with four minutes remaining, Hosannah charged forward and played Machuca into the box, but he blazed his shot over the bar.
The home side were then awarded a second penalty after a sliding challenge from Paul McKay sent Fraser Preston tumbling and Stobbs made no mistake from the spot.
The Whites pushed for an equaliser in stoppage time, but the Owls held on for all three points.
