Carlos Corberán’s Under-23s suffered a narrow 3-2 home defeat against a Sheffield United side containing three first team players, to end their winning streak at Thorp Arch.

The Whites had an early chance inside the first minute when Jack McKay broke into the Blades box and forced Marcus Dewhurst into action.

Sheffield United won a penalty in the 17th minute, with Paudie O’Connor back peddling, he went to ground and was deemed to have tripped Nathan Thomas.  It was Thomas who stepped up to take the spot kick, but Huffer made a fine save to his right.

Bryce Hossanah then did well to chase down a Dewhurst kick, getting a block on it, but his efforts weren’t rewarded, with the ball going off target and out for a goal kick.

The visitors were forced into a double change just after the 30 minute mark, goalkeeper Dewhurst and full-back Keenan Ferguson were withdrawn through injury.

Despite the injury’s, the visitors took the lead a minute later, when Tyler Smith bundled home a cross into the box.

Leeds almost levelled soon after, Robbie Gotts was just inches away from finding the top corner, with an effort from the edge of the box.

The Blades went further in front before the break though, when Thomas stole possession from Paudie O’Connor and Smith went through and rounded Huffer, before slotting home.

Half Time: Leeds United 0-2 Sheffield United

Sheffield United almost added a third after the break after Smith won a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Caolan Lavery’s effort went just wide.

Corberán introduced Jack Clarke and Oliver Sarkic ten minutes into the second period and the latter went close from a set-piece on the edge of the box, but couldn’t find the target.

Sarkic again tried his luck in the 66th minute, with a low, long range effort going just wide, but three minutes later, he was rewarded, when Clarke teed him up on the edge of the box and he found the bottom right corner, to give Leeds hope.

However, less than a minute after Leeds had pulled a goal back, the Blades restored their two goal cushion.  Substitute Oliver Greaves broke down the right and found the net, lifting the ball over the out-coming Huffer.

Clarke then threatened when he cut inside from the left flank, but he couldn’t find the target with his effort.

Hosannah then made a great run forward, before playing a neat one-two with Clarke, he broke into the box and tried to tee up Jack McKay, but his square ball was intercepted at the last.

Two minutes from time, Jack McKay won Leeds a free-kick on the right side and Paul McKay set up a climax finish by heading home.

Leeds had one chance in added time, when Gotts played a dangerous low cross into the area, but no Whites player could finish off the chance, as their three match winning streak at Thorp Arch came to an end.
