Leeds United 2 (Pearce 31, Machuca 47) Barnsley 1 (Wandle pen 24)

Leeds United recorded a third straight win at Thorp Arch, by defeating Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, thanks to efforts from Tom Pearce and Alex Machuca.

The Whites had a good chance inside 15 minutes, Pearce delivered a corner and Liam Kitching headed just over the bar.

Three minutes later, Barnsley had the opportunity to take the lead, Rhys Dolan was picked out in the Leeds box with a cross from the right, but he could only head over.

The Whites then had a big appeal for a penalty when Jack McKay got to the byline and broke into the box, he appeared to be tripped, but no spot kick was awarded.

Four minutes after Leeds were denied a penalty, Barnsley were awarded one, when Will Huffer was adjudged to have brought down Jerome Slew.  Louis Wandle stepped up and struck, Huffer did well to get a hand to it, but couldn’t keep it out.

Barnsley’s lead lasted less than six minutes, the Whites were awarded an indirect free-kick in the Tykes box and the ball was laid off to Pearce who superbly found the top left corner.

Ahead of the break, Machuca fired a neat cross in looking for Jack McKay, who was just inches away from making contact, but it wouldn’t have counted, with the flag up for offside.

Half Time: Leeds United 1-1 Barnsley

Leeds made a great start to the second half, taking the lead for the first time in the match, Machuca found the net with a fine 20 yard strike into the bottom left corner.

Two minutes later, Leeds had Huffer to thank for keeping Leeds in front, he made a good stop to deny Matthew Wolfe.

Pearce then broke down the left hand side, he teed up Adrian Balboa, but the forward could only fire over the bar under pressure.

Barnsley almost leveled when Stephen Mallen fired on goal from the edge of the box, but Huffer was on hand to produce a fine save to keep the Whites in front.

Substitute Jack Clarke had the chance to seal it one minute after being introduced, he started a counter attack including Bryce Hosannah and Jack McKay, before being teed up in the box, but he put his effort wide.

Fellow substitute Jamie Shackleton had a chance, firing from the edge of the box, but he couldn’t keep his effort down.

The Whites then saw out four minutes of added time, to ensure their winning run at Thorp Arch continued.
