Mark Jackson will take a young Under-23s side to play Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
This will be the second fixture in the Premier League Cup for the Whites, having already faced Wigan at home, in a closely contested match won by the visitors.
With a number of the usual Under-23s squad away with their respective international teams, head coach Jackson has been clear that it gives a real opportunity for the younger players within the squad and with the Under-18s to step up and make an impact.
The teams are facing each other in Group E of the competition, where up to now, everyone has played one game each. Sunderland lost three-nil to Mansfield Town in their opening match, whilst the Whites lost 2-1 against the Latics. Mansfield and Wigan will meet one another for the first time at the end of the month.
The cup competition is split into eight groups of four teams, where each team within the group will play one another home and away. From there, the top two teams will progress into the knockout stages of the competition which are all one-off knockout ties, with extra-time and penalties if needed.
The current holders of the Premier League Cup are Everton, who were crowned champions in 2018/19. For the last two years, the the competition has either been curtailed or hasn’t taken place, due to the pandemic.

What has Mark Jackson said, ahead of the match?
“It’ll be good for the development of the players, it is always good to play in a big stadium like that and if there are some fans in, that will make it even better. This is the type of experience we want to give to our players. Certainly in the Under-18s, they only play on training grounds, so this is a great experience for them in a number of ways.”
