Mark Jackson will take his Under-23s side to the home of the Lancashire FA on Friday evening, to take on Wigan Athletic in the Under-23s Premier League Cup (19:00).

This Group E fixture at the Leyland County Ground will the fifth game of the group stage for the Whites, and the fourth for hosts Wigan.

The Latics have a 100% winning record in the competition up to this point. A 2-1 win against Leeds in York picked up their first three points, before further successes followed at home to Mansfield and Sunderland.

The group is still wide open and all four teams are able to progress to the knock-out stages, depending on how the remaining games go for all sides. Leeds are currently a point behind second placed Sunderland but have a game in hand.

Last time out, Jackson's side played out a 3-3 draw with the Black Cats at the LNER Community Stadium in York. Crysencio Summerville's first-half hat-trick was cancelled out by a late visitors fightback.

After Friday's game against Wigan, the the Whites will play their final match of the group away at Mansfield Town in the middle of February, which is likely to determine the possibility of continuing in the competition for either side.

The cup competition as a whole is split into eight groups of four teams, where each team within the group will play one another home and away. From there, the top two teams will progress into the knockout stages of the competition which are all one-off knockout ties, with extra-time and penalties if needed.

The current holders of the Premier League Cup are Everton, who were crowned champions in 2018/19. For the last two years, the the competition has either been curtailed or hasn’t taken place, due to the pandemic.
