Leeds United Under-21s will play their first Premier League 2 match of the 2023/24 campaign on Friday evening, taking on Brighton & Hove Albion away from home.
The season opener gets underway ay 7pm and will be played at the AMEX Training Centre, with Michael Skubala’s side looking to get off to a positive start.
Having won promotion from Premier League 2 Division 2 last season via a convincing play-off final victory against Nottingham Forest at Elland Road, the Whites will now play in a newly reformed league structure.
The format is now that all Category One academies will play within the same league for the forthcoming campaign. There are 26 teams within the division, with each team seeded into different pots to decide their opponents over the season.
The Whites will play 20 matches in that period and at the end of the season, the top 16 sides in the table will qualify for an end of season play-off. Whoever finishes top of the league will play the side in 16th, the team in second will play 15th, the side in third will play 14th, and so on…
As well as finishing in the top 16 being key, teams will also be aiming to get inside of the top 12. Achieving that will see them selected for the Premier League International Cup in the 2024/25 campaign.
Unfortunately due to broadcast restrictions at Premier League 2 level, Friday night’s match will not be shown on LUTV. However, highlights from the game will be made available shortly after.
