Leeds United Under-18s earned a deserved point against Manchester City Under-18s after substitute Jack Morris’ late header cancelled out Tyrone Samba’s first-half strike.
Blue skies and bright sunshine set the scene at Thorp Arch as Rob Etherington’s side welcomed the league-leaders to West Yorkshire.
Leeds made the sharper start. Jacob Howard’s long pass found Kenneth Mensah, who cleverly cushioned the ball into the path of Ollie Pickles. His dangerous cross forced Kaden Braithwaite to climb highest and produce a crucial defensive header.
City’s first real opportunity arrived after eight minutes. Floyd Samba weaved inside from the left before striking towards goal, yet Howard stood firm to block.
Moments later, Callum Mills was handed a golden chance when he intercepted a loose pass from goalkeeper Ben Vickery. However, the ball bobbled as he pulled the trigger forcing his effort wide.
A neat passage involving Oliver Wood, Howard and Louie Dudley released Mensah in space. He teed up Mills on the edge of the area, though a crowded penalty box prevented a clear sight of goal and the Whites were forced to reset.
Dudley then flicked on a long ball into Mensah’s stride and once more Mills looked poised to strike, only for Wain to intervene decisively.
Floyd Samba continued to probe, creating space on the edge of the box before firing goalwards. Howard produced another brave block to turn the effort behind and he also towered above everyone to head away the resulting corner.
Leeds came close to breaking the deadlock when Pickles skipped beyond Finlay Gorman and released Louie Philpott down the left. His driven cross flashed across the six-yard area but Edward Ibrovic-Fletcher could not apply the decisive touch.
Despite enjoying sustained possession in City’s half, United were unable to convert pressure into reward and, after 27 minutes, the breakthrough arrived for the visitors.
Against the run of play, a through ball split the defence and sent Tyrone Samba racing clear. He shifted onto his right foot and finished beyond Wood.
Leeds sought an immediate response as Pickles intercepted in midfield and fed Mensah on the right, yet Floyd Samba tracked back well to recover possession.
Pressure continued to build, with Samuel Alker and Pickles combining cleverly from a free-kick routine. The delivery travelled beyond the far post, but Howard could not direct his attempt on target in the final meaningful action of the first half.
HALF TIME: Leeds United U18 0-1 Manchester City U18
The visitors began the second period strongly. Wain broke free down the right and cut the ball back for Floyd Samba, who fired over the crossbar.
Wain remained a constant threat, bursting forward and flashing a strike across the face of goal. He later attempted to weave into the penalty area once more, only for Philpott to produce a perfectly timed sliding challenge.
City’s pressure intensified when Lamb found space inside the area and unleashed a right-footed effort that crashed against the crossbar. Substitute Charlie Courtman then surged into the box but Howard stepped across to concede a corner.
The initial delivery was headed clear by Luke Matykiewicz, though only as far as Tyrone Samba on the edge of the area. His strike was charged down bravely by Loui Whitehead who diverted the ball behind for another set piece.
The Whites attempted to punish those missed opportunities. Substitute Carrick Njinko showed quick footwork to evade Tyrone Samba before teeing up Whitehead from distance yet his effort drifted wide.
The home side’s attacking urgency grew as the clock ticked down. In the 80th minute, Whitehead slipped a clever pass into Alker, who squared for substitute Morris to tuck the ball beneath the goalkeeper. However, celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.
Seven minutes later, those scenes were brought back and this time they were allowed to continue! Mills delivered an inviting cross from the right and Morris guided his header beyond the keeper, levelling the game after a resilient defensive display!
The Under-18s now go two games unbeaten as they now turn their focus to Saturday’s fixture against Wolves at Thorp Arch.
