The Leeds United Foundation and first-team player Brenden Aaronson were proud to present Ellis Horner with the Excellence in Football Award at their inaugural Supporting Our City Awards on Wednesday evening.
Ellis has been playing for the Leeds United Pan Disability programme for a number of years, before his coaches asked for his help assisting the younger children’s sessions.
Despite facing health challenges that prevent him from playing mainstream football, Ellis has never let that hold him back. The youngster always arrives with a smile, ready to give his best, and he embraces every opportunity that comes his way.
By sharing his story and representing the programme, Ellis has helped others to see the importance of inclusion, positivity, and resilience. Ellis is more than just a participant – he is a role model who shows what it means to face challenges with courage and joy.
Earlier this year in April, Ellis visited Thorp Arch training ground representing the club's official charity, to meet first-team players Ethan Ampadu, Willy Gnonto, and Ilia Gruev to discuss their love for football, their progression through the club’s official charity, and the generous support of club partner AMT to the programme.
During the visit, the players and children took part in a 3v3 match, giving the young people a once in a lifetime opportunity, which perfectly coincided with the end of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
“I’m excited and happy,” Ellis said on receiving his award. “I didn’t believe in myself before but now I am 11 but I play for the under-16s, there’s two levels, the Championship and Premier League team, and I’m in the Premier League team.
“I’m proud to play for the Pan Disability team and the Leeds United badge.”
From all at Leeds United, we’d like to congratulate Ellis on his award and thank him for his contributions to the Leeds United Foundation.
We’d also like to thank Tyler Blackburn, who has been highly commended for this award.
