Leeds United Under-21s put in an impressive performance at home to Newcastle United Under-21s, controlling the game throughout to secure three valuable points.

Goals from Josh McDonald and Freddie Lane either side of half-time were enough to give Scott Gardner’s young squad the win, in an enjoyable Premier League 2 encounter at the LNER Community Stadium in York.

Speaking after the match, Gardner gave his thoughts to LUTV.

“We were solid in every department today,” our Under-21s coach began, reflecting on a well earned victory.

“We spoke after the Middlesbrough game [last weekend] about conceding four goals the way we did. I didn't really think we looked like we were under any real threat today, so we’re really pleased.

“I think the performance was complete. We’ve found it difficult against teams that sit in to break them down, but obviously with us two goals up, you're not then going to get four or five against those types of sides.

“Then equally, it was about being more solid at the other end, which we were. So yeah, it's a good win.”

Next up, the Whites will face Sky Bet League One opposition on Tuesday evening when they travel to Oakwell, taking on Barnsley in the EFL Trophy.

Gardner added: “We looked like senior players as opposed to academy [against Newcastle], which is really helpful going into Tuesday's game, when we're going to have to be mature.

“We're going to play a team from League One, it’s an experience and an opportunity for our players to show that they're capable of playing at that level and higher. This is exactly what we want for the players."
