Scott Gardner: We can learn some lessons

Boss speaks after West Ham.

Scott Gardner vs Arsenal U21

Leeds United Under-21s were undone by West Ham United Under-21s at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with all four goals coming in the second half.

After the match, Scott Gardner said: "A naive second half - we did the opposite of what we were doing in the first half and caused our own problems. We were punished by an older, more experienced side."

Ollie Pickles equalised for the Whites in the 71st minute, before the Hammers scored twice to condemn Leeds to defeat.

"He's been once of our most consistent players and what I'd like to see from him, maybe a little more leadership in the second half," the boss said on Pickles' performance. "He is one of the more senior players in the group, and just to lead a little bit around the match plan and that's what we came away from."

On Callum Mills' instant impact of the bench: "That's what his challenge is. He had some lovely moments, so can he starts getting some numbers, goals and assists? He's had a nice moment where I'm just needing that more now.

"I thought you could tell that he had a lot of experience under his belt in terms of being with the first team group," Gardner commented as Charlie Crew made his return from injury from the off. "We missed him when he went off, so credit to him."

The young Whites are back in action against Sunderland next, and the Head Coach looked ahead: "That'll be another physical game against a side that will be older than us and hopefully we can learn a few lessons from that second half."
