Leeds United Women start the 2024/25 FAWNL Division One North season this weekend as they host local rivals Huddersfield Town Women at the Bannister Prentice Stadium.

The clash will be an important test for Simon Wood’s side as they look to start strongly, against the recently relegated Terriers.

Speaking ahead of the match, midfielder Sarah Danby says the squad are determined to improve on the previous campaign and challenge at the top of the league this time around.

“I think when we look at last season’s league position, we will maybe be a little disappointed,” she told LUTV. “But that just gives us the motivation to kick on this season.

“We have made some really good new signings and we are aiming to up our game this season and take the momentum from the end of last year.

“Pre-season has been really positive. The new signings are great and are going to strengthen us which is great for competition in the team, which I find really healthy.

“Looking at the squad, I think we are stronger and pre-season has been really good, so we are excited to go out and see what we can do this season.

“We have got to look at promotion. It is obviously a really difficult league with only one team going up, but we aren’t coming into the season to finish fourth or fifth, we want to be contending for promotion.

“Looking at this weekend’s match, it is probably the toughest start we could have got. But you can look at that in two ways. You can either think this is going to be tough or think let’s see what we can do.

“They came down but they are going to be strong because they have kept a lot of their team and have made some good signings.

“It will be a really hard game, a derby, but we are at home and I believe we can go and get the three points.”

“We get a really good crowd at Garforth, the support is amazing, and I think there will be a few new faces as well!”
