Sam Byram was delighted to be back playing in front of supporters as Leeds United got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start, with a 3-0 victory over Harrogate Town at the Exercise Stadium.
Junior Firpo’s 12th-minute strike got the ball rolling for the Whites, with goals from Georginio Rutter and debutant Sam Chambers sealing proceedings in the second half.
On the hottest day of the year so far, Byram was pleased to be back out there as preparations for the upcoming campaign ramp up.
“It was nice to blow the cobwebs off and get in front of the fans again, to have the new kit on and play a competitive match,” the 30-year-old told LUTV.
“It was enjoyable. It was a first test, coming to a stadium with fans here, it is the start of pre-season and one we are hoping to build on and keep building the fitness.
“Harrogate are a good team, they moved the ball well, they are physical and they were in the match at times.
“Like I said, it is about getting fitness at this stage and building the blocks for the start of the season.”
Attention now turns to the Whites' pre-season tour of Germany, something Byram knows well having made the trip under boss Daniel Farke before.
“A couple of times I have been to this camp, so I know exactly what goes on and I’m looking forward to it. It is a good time to bond as a team, get some more fitness in and work towards our goals.”
