Leeds United travelled away from home on Friday evening, taking on South Yorkshire outfit Rotherham United in a first game back after the international break.

Despite controlling much of the game and scoring early in the match, the home side battled back to level, meaning it ended in a draw.

Daniel Farke’s side went into the lead inside seven minutes in South Yorkshire. A superb ball in behind the defence from Georginio Rutter found Crysencio Summerville.

The Dutchman controlled brilliantly before running into the box, looking up, and curling with finesse into the bottom corner to score his seventh goal of the season.

The game then had very few chances at either end, with Leeds controlling much of the possession, looking to break their hosts down.

Two efforts did come, one for each side, as the game approached the 30-minute mark. Dan James broke free and shot over from a tight angle, whereas Sam Nombe flicked his shot just over the bar from inside the box for the Millers.

The next quick counter-attack brought two further shots on the Rotherham goal. Joel Piroe played in Summerville who forced a save from Viktor Johansson, before Georginio then struck wide just after.

Right on the stroke of the first half whistle, the hosts equalised. With the final attack of the opening 45 minutes, Hakeem Odoffin had a chance to shoot left-footed, and found the bottom corner.

HALF TIME: Rotherham United 1-1 Leeds United

No changes were made on either side during the break, with the teams who had battled away in the first half continuing to face one another.

A superb piece of defending from Liam Cooper kept Leeds ahead early in the half. Nombe had a huge chance in the box and struck low under Illan Meslier, with the skipper getting himself back on the line to clear it away.

In what had a been a half lacking any real chances, Farke looked to his bench for fresh inspiration, making a triple change on the 70th minute.

Patrick Bamford, Willy Gnonto and Ian Poveda came on, replacing Junior Firpo, Glen Kamara and Georginio, which meant a change tactically on the pitch too.

The changes did make an impact in terms of chances. Bamford and Summerville combined to create a good opening, Piroe then was denied by Johansson, before Gnonto struck a half-volley narrowly over moments later.

The final two substitutions made by the Whites both also brought about further key moments. Pascal Struijk replaced Cooper and he saw a header flash narrowly past the post quickly after coming on.

Moments later, Jaidon Anthony entered in place of James and he went one step further by finding the back of the net, only to see the flag deny him, going up for an offside previously in the move.

The whistle went soon after and confirmed it would be a point each at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Leeds are next in action on Wednesday night, at home to Swansea City.
