Leeds United Women ended their FAWNL Division One North campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Merseyrail.

Macy Ellis’ second half strike was enough for the Whites to take all three points, in a game of little quality on Merseyside.

Leeds dominated the ball throughout, but were unable to really test Danielle Camp in the Merseyrail goal in the first half.

Kath Smith and Rachel Hindle both had efforts from range which were easily held, before Merseyrail crafted the first clear cut chance of the game.

A neat move following a throw in saw the hosts’ biggest creative spark Millie Fitzpatrick played in, but she lacked composure at the crucial point and blasted over from inside the box.

Fitzpatrick then forced Carrie Simpson into her first save of the game after getting in down the right and firing towards the near post. The Leeds’ stopper was on hand again minutes later to claim Georgia Wood’s free-kick.

The closest Leeds came to a breakthrough before half time was after Macy Ellis robbed Wood of possession and drilled the ball across, Jess Carberry almost put through her own goal but she did well to recover and scramble clear.

HALF TIME: Merseyrail 0-0 Leeds United Women

The deadlock was finally broken just before the hour mark and it was Ellis, Leeds brightest player on the day who found the back of the net.

Abbie Brown whipped a superb ball in from the left, Ellis attacked the back post and couldn’t miss from close range.

Five minutes later, Brown tried her luck from a free-kick after Ellis had been pulled back by Wood, but Camp got down well to keep it out and no Leeds player was on hand to bury the rebound.

The hosts battled and looked for an equaliser, but Leeds defended set pieces well to keep their clean sheet intact.

Despite their efforts, Merseyrail struggled to cause too much bother for Simpson in the Leeds goal.

One goal proved to be enough in the end, as Leeds ended their FAWNL Division One North campaign with three points.
