Leeds United ran out winners at Old Trafford for the first time in 44 years on Monday evening, as Noah Okafor’s first half brace secured all three points over Manchester United.

In front of a raucous away end, the Swiss international pounced on two loose balls to put the Whites in the driving seat in a dominant first period.

Ahead of kick off, Daniel Farke made four changes to his side that reached the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals with victory over West Ham United, bringing Karl Darlow, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin into the starting XI.

The Whites almost got off to a perfect start after three minutes, as Gudmundsson broke down the left flank before drilling across the face of goal to an arriving Calvert-Lewin, whose sliding effort was saved crucially by Senne Lammens.

Only seconds later, the deadlock was broken by a White shirt, sending the away end into raptures…

Jayden Bogle was released down the right wing and crossed from the byline onto the head of Calvert-Lewin. Our number 9 forced his defender to redirect the ball to the foot of Okafor, who calmly slotted home from the centre of the box!

As the hosts looked to find a leveller, Jaka Bijol demonstrated some excellent defending as Benjamin Sesko looked to break in-behind, stopping the forward in his tracks expertly before he could trouble Darlow.

After half an hour, Leeds came forward again down the left flank. The ball was cleared only as far as Gudmundsson, clipping the ball into the box and forcing the opposition to intervene.

Following a handful of half-clearances from the hosts, the ball fell to Okafor on the edge of the area who volleyed, and taking a slight deflection, secured his second goal of the evening!

Looking to get in on the act, Calvert-Lewin rose highest to meet a cross from Bogle on the right flank but cleared the bar, after Leeds broke again at width.

The Whites came so close to another right before the break, as Ao Tanaka latched on to a poor ball out from the back and showed some great feet to beat Lammens, but the ball got away and Lisandro Martinez cleared off the line.

From the resulting corner, Pascal Struijk rose highest, forcing some more good reflexes from the hosts’ ‘keeper who claimed at close range. Moments later, Paul Tierney blew the whistle to signal the end to a rampant first half from Leeds.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-2 Leeds United

Fresh out from the break, Darlow and James Justin denied the hosts the next goal, as the ‘keeper took the power out of Sesko’s strike as he ran in on goal, and the fullback did well to head the resulting loose ball over the bar.

10 minutes after the restart, Martinez was shown a red card for violent conduct, reducing the hosts to 10 men.

To a chorus of ‘Olés’ resonating from the away end, Gudmundsson strode through the middle of the park baring down on goal before shooting, but dragging his strike just wide of the post.

Down the other end, Darlow was called into action as Matheus Cunha powered a shot from a tight angle towards the near post, forcing a smart parry from the Welsh international.

The hosts did find a breakthrough however, as Casemiro headed into the back of the net with 20 minutes to play.

Seeking a third, Aaronson was found on the wing and played in Bogle, whose floated cross found the head of Calvert-Lewin again, but Lammens was alert to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Darlow was the next of the ‘keepers to be tested, as he reacted quickly to Sesko’s header to claw away from danger superbly. From the resulting corner, Calvert-Lewin was alert on the line to clear crucially, before a series of blocks kept the hosts at bay.

After some exceptional defensive efforts from Farke’s side deep into stoppage time, Paul Tierney sounded the full time whistle to signal all three points heading back to LS11!
