Leeds United Women are back in league action this week, as they travel to second-placed Newcastle United Women.
The Magpies are one of the strongest sides in the division, with the league title their target again, after they narrowly missed out on it last season, to Liverpool Feds, despite losing just two games all season.
Newcastle will know there is little room for error again this season. Durham Cestria currently lead the way and are seven points clear, Newcastle have two games in hand so need to make them count if they are to get back within touching distance.
The Whites have ground to make up in the league but will be massively buoyed by their terrific cup form. Rick Passmoor’s side booked their place in their first National Final for 10 years last weekend, defeating Southampton Women 2-0 at the So-Trak Stadium.
Supporter Information:
For supporters making the trip north tomorrow, the game kicks off at 2pm and Druid Park, NE13 8DF.
Entry is £3 for adults, £1 for concessions. Please note it is cash only.
The hosts advise that there is limited parking available at the venue but additional parking available at Callerton Parkway Metro Station.
Previous meeting:
This is the eagerly anticipated first meeting between the two this season. Last season, Newcastle were the only team to record the double over Leeds.
The Magpies won 6-2 at home almost a year ago to the day, with Sarah Danby and Olivia Smart’s goals proving to be scant consolation, with Newcastle running out comfortable winners thanks to a Kacie Elson hat-trick and goals from Katie Barker, Rebecca Ferguson and Georgina Spraggon.
The two met again just a fortnight later, the Magpies leaving the So-Trak Stadium with a 2-0 win thanks to a goal from Erin Nelson and a Laura Bartup own-goal.
Players to Watch:
Georgia Gibson is Newcatle’s top scorer this season with 13 goals so far. Bianca Owens is another goal threat for the Magpies and the Leeds defence will be well aware of her after she netted a hat-trick against the Whites earlier this season, for Norton & Stockton Ancients.
The striker has netted twice in four games since making the switch to Newcastle and has a total of 12 so far this campaign.
Leeds’ top scorer is Abbie Brown who has 12 goals this season and was unlucky not to add to that last weekend.
Amy Woodruff netted a brace last weekend in the FAWNL Plate Sem-Final win and will be keen on putting a run of goals together.
