Preview: Halifax Women vs Leeds United Women

Leeds United Women start their FAWNL League Cup adventure with a West Yorkshire derby against Halifax Women FC on Wednesday evening.

Simon Wood’s side head into the clash off the back of a dominant 3-1 victory over recently relegated AFC Fylde last time out.

The Whites fell behind against the run of play to go into the break a goal behind, but strikes from Sian Gibrill-Keating, Kath Smith and Sarah Danby rounded off an inspired second-half display to claim all three points in Lancashire.

Halifax, currently still in the division above United, will be the third side to have played in the third-tier last season that Leeds have faced so far this campaign, after the curtain raiser saw Leeds narrowly edged out by Huddersfield Town at the Bannister Prentice Stadium.

It has been a difficult start to the season for Rob Mitchell’s Halifax side in the Northern Premier Division who were convincingly beaten by Rugby Borough in their opener, before falling to a 4-0 defeat away at West Bromwich Albion last time out.

The teams met at this stage of the competition last term, with the Calderdale outfit coming out 4-3 winners in a seven-goal thriller, despite Jess Rousseau’s brace for the Whites.

The winner of this tie will progress to FAWNL Cup, with the losers entering the FAWNL Plate. Leeds have fond memories of the Plate, having won the competition in 2023.

Action from Featherstone’s Millennium Stadium gets underway at 7:45pm.
