Leeds United face West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in our first away game of the season on Saturday, August 17th at 12:30pm.
Ahead of the fixture, we take a look back through the years at some of the players who have played for both clubs.
GOALKEEPER:
David Stewart
The Glaswegian between the sticks signed for Leeds from Ayr United in 1973. He made a total of 74 appearances for the Whites over the course of six years including playing his part in Leeds’ run to the final of the 1974/75 European Cup. He made the move to West Bromwich Albion in 1979 where he didn’t make an appearance and left the club after 18 months.
DEFENDER:
Martin Dickinson
The Leeds born and bred centre back made his professional debut with the club in 1980 and featured 116 times and scored three goals for the Whites. West Brom secured his signature after Dickinson spent six years involved with the first team and went on to make 50 appearances in two seasons for the Baggies.
DEFENDER:
Kyle Bartley
Bartley signed for Leeds United on loan from Swansea City ahead of the 2016/17 season and played in 50 games in all competitions that season, scoring six times. The defender made the permanent move to the Baggies in 2018 and is a current West Brom player. He has 201 appearances (and counting) to his name as a Baggies player.
DEFENDER:
Chris Whyte
When Whyte departed Arsenal in 1986, he left for the United States and had two spells with Major Indoor Soccer League clubs; New York Express, and Los Angeles Lazers before returning to England to join West Bromwich Albion. He featured in 84 games for West Brom before directly joining Leeds United in 1990. Whyte was a part of the 1991/92 First Division title winning team and played 147 times for the club in three years, 146 of which he started.
DEFENDER:
Sean Gregan
After racking up 85 appearances and spending two seasons with the Baggies from 2002 and 2004, Gregan made the move up north to sign for Leeds in ahead of the 2004/05 campaign. He was a part of the squad that reached the Championship play-off final the following season in 2006 and after playing 74 times for the club, Gregan departed the club in January 2007.
MIDFIELDER:
Johnny Giles
LUFC legend Johnny Giles joined Leeds ahead of the 1963/64 season. The Irishman would go on to feature in 12 seasons for the Whites, winning promotion to the First Division in his debut season and subsequently winning the First Division twice, the 1968 League Cup, the 1969 Charity Shield and the FA Cup in 1972. Giles accepted an offer to become West Brom’s player-manager in 1975 while still playing for and managing the Republic of Ireland national team. He played 75 times for the club and netted three goals.
MIDFIELDER:
Alex Mowatt
The current West Brom midfielder came through the ranks at Leeds United and went on to play 125 games and score 13 goals for his boyhood club. After spending five seasons with Barnsley, Mowatt signed for West Brom in the summer of 2021, following his former Barnsley boss Valérien Ismaël to the Baggies. He currently has 44 appearances for the club.
MIDFIELDER:
Jerome Thomas
Thomas spent four seasons with the Baggies from 2009 to 2013 and racked up 106 appearances and 13 goals during his time at the club. In November 2012, the winger joined Leeds on a six-week loan deal. He played seven times for the Whites and scored one goal.
FORWARD:
Tyler Roberts
Roberts began his footballing career with West Bromwich Albion and came through the ranks as an academy graduate. He made his only appearance for the club in 2016 in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League. Leeds United snapped up Roberts on deadline day January 2018 and went on to play 108 times for the club and net nine goals.
FORWARD:
Bob Taylor
The striker started his career with Leeds United and after making just eight appearances between 1985 and 1987, his breakout campaign occurred during the 1987/88 season where he netted 12 goals in 39 games. Taylor left the club the following season for Bristol City and later joined West Brom in 1992. After spending six seasons with the Baggies in his first spell, he became an icon at the club. He left for Bolton Wanderers in 1998 but returned to the club in 2000 and spent an additional three seasons there. His final Baggies statistics were 377 appearances and 131 goals.
FORWARD:
Rob Hulse
Hulse joined West Brom ahead of their 2003/04 promotion winning campaign and bagged 10 goals in 33 league games to help them reach the Premier League in his debut season. However, the striker signed for Leeds on loan from the Baggies in February 2005 after a lack of game time with his parent club. After 6 goals in 13 games, Hulse permanently signed for the Whites ahead of the 2005/06 season. He left Leeds in the summer of 2006 and, in total, scored 2
