Leeds United return to league action against South Yorkshire side Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, September 2nd at Elland Road.
Ahead of the fixture, we take a look back through the years at a selection of players who have featured for both clubs.
GK: Bailey Peacock-Farrell
The Northern Irish shot-stopper began his senior footballing career with Leeds United and featured 41 times in net for the Whites between 2015 and 2019. He was later signed by Premier League side Burnley and was sent out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the 2021/22 campaign with the Owls in League One where he played 47 times in all competitions
DEF: Mel Sterland The Sheffield-born full-back spent the majority of his career with Sheffield Wednesday as he racked up 347 appearances and 49 goals for the whites in 11 years with the Owls. After a brief stint at Rangers, Sterling moved to Leeds in 1989 where he spent the next four years of his career. He was a part of the Second Division and the First Division title winning sides. After 114 appearances and 16 goals, Sterland departed the club in 1994.
DEF: Tom Lees After coming through the Leeds United academy, Lees made his debut for the club 2011 and went on to play 135 time for the Whites in defence. He directly joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2014 and played 274 times in all competitions in seven seasons for the Owls.
DEF: Jon Newsome Newsome came through he ranks at his hometown club Sheffield Wednesday but played only seven times for the Owls. He departed the club for Leeds in 1991 and went on to feature 76 times, scoring three times for the Whites. His hometown club came calling for his signature once again in 1996 for a second spell with the club. Newsome made an additional 54 appearances for the Owls in four years before his retirement in 2000.
DEF: Glynn Snodin
The full-back played 59 times for The Wednesday and netted once before directly making the move to Leeds in 1987. He scored 13 goals and played 116 times for the Whites until his departure in 1992, he was also a part of the squad that gained promotion to the First Division in 1990.
MID: Carlton Palmer The Former England international played 201 games for the Owls from 1989 to 1994 and found the net on 12 occasions. He played for England 18 times during this period and directly joined Leeds from The Wednesday in 1994. He then spent the next three seasons at Elland Road and went on to feature 117 times and score six goals.
MID: Barry Bannan The midfielder signed on loan for Leeds from Aston Villa in March 2011 but was recalled the following month after seven appearances for the Whites. After spells with Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers, he was snapped up by Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 and remains there to this day. He currently has 362 appearances to his name at the club and 30 goals.
MID: John Sheridan
Sheridan made 272 appearances for Leeds United between 1982 and 1989 and after a brief stint with Nottingham Forest, his next destination was Sheffield Wednesday. He would stay in South Yorkshire for the next seven years and net 33 goals in 243 games for the Owls. He won the Football League Cup with the club and netted the winning goal in the final.
MID: Ross Barkley
During his early Everton days, Barkley was sent out on loan to two clubs - Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, both in the same season. He first joined Sheffield Wednesday in September 2012 and featured 13 times and scored four goals for them. He was recalled by Everton and then sent out on loan to Leeds in January 2013 where he played four times for the Whites.
ATT: John Pearson
Sheffield-born Pearson began his career with The Wednesday and netted 24 goals in 105 games for his hometown club before leaving for Charlton Athletic. After one season with the Addicks, he made the move back north to join Leeds United in 1986. He stayed with the Whites until 1991 where was a part of the squad that won promotion to the First Division as Second Division champions in 1990. He left the club with 127 games and 12 goals to his name.
ATT: Carl Shutt
Shutt is the final Sheffield-born player on the list as he rounds off the starting eleven. Sheffield Wednesday snapped him up from Spalding United in 1985 and he spent two seasons with the club where he scored 16 goals in 40 games for the Owls. After a spell with Bristol City, Leeds United secured his signature in 1989. He netted a hat-trick on his debut for the club and won the 1992 First Division. He left the club in 1993 after scoring 24 goals and playing 106 games for the Whites.
