Played For Both: Leeds United & Cardiff City

We host Cardiff City at Elland Road this weekend as we take on the Bluebirds in the Sky Bet Championship.

Ahead of the game, we have taken a look at the players who have represented both clubs and selected a Starting XI from those who have worn both shirts.

GOALKEEPER:

Tony Warner

Shot-stopper Warner joined Cardiff City in 2004 and made 30 appearances for the club in all competitions in his first season. He then spent the next three seasons with Fulham - joining Leeds on loan in his second season with the London club. Warner featured 14 times for the Whites in 2006.

DEFENDER:

Cody Drameh

Ex-Leeds United defender Cody Drameh made 22 appearances for Cardiff on loan from the Whites during the 2021/22 season. Drameh would also then spend another season in the Championship when he joined Luton on loan the following season helping them on their way to the Premier League. The full-back made a total of 10 appearances for Leeds United in all competitions between 2021 and 2024.

DEFENDER:

Sol Bamba

The late Sol Bamba originally joined Leeds on loan in January 2015. He made his Whites debut against Huddersfield in a 2-1 away win in his first month and went on to score his first goal for the club in a 3-0 away victory at Fulham two months later. Bamba sealed a permanent deal with the club in the summer of that year and became skipper for the 2015/16 campaign. After 56 games and 5 goals for the Whites, Bamba made the move to south Wales during the 2016/17 season and would go on to guide the Bluebirds to the Premier League the following season - becoming an icon at the club. He racked up 118 games and 10 goals to his name during his time in the Welsh capital.

DEFENDER:

Lee Peltier

In August 2012, Leeds boss Neil Warnock snapped up Peltier from Leicester City and he spent two seasons with the club racking up 75 appearances and netting one goal. The Bluebirds swooped in for the defender in January 2015 and Peltier went on to feature in 163 games for the club - 20 of which in the Premier League.

DEFENDER:

Tony Capaldi

The Northern Ireland international made 62 appearances for the south Wales club from 2007 to 2010 and had a brief stint in Yorkshire on loan with Leeds in 2009. Capaldi made three appearances for the Whites during his loan spell and was also an unused substitute for Leeds’ 1-0 win over Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup that season.

MIDFIELDER:

Stephen McPhail

After coming through the Leeds United academy, the Republic of Ireland international played 78 games and scored three times between 1997 and 2004. McPhail would later make the move to Cardiff in 2006 and stay there until 2013. The midfielder was a part of the Cardiff side that were FA Cup runners-up in 2008, Championship play-off final runners-up in 2010 and League Cup runners-up in 2012.

MIDFIELDER:

Kevin Aherne-Evans

Aherne-Evans began his footballing career with Leeds United and was a part of the youth side which included Jonathan Woodgate, Alan Smith, Paul Robinson and Stephen McPhail. After failing to break into the first team, the Welsh midfielder signed for Cardiff City in 2000 where he played 30 games for the Bluebirds and scored three times.

MIDFIELDER:

Tom Adeyemi

Adeyemi made 23 appearances for the Bluebirds and scored one goal in all competitions between 2014 and 2017 and joined Leeds on loan ahead of the 2015/16 season. He was frequently involved during the campaign and played 24 times in all competitions before returning to his parent club in South Wales.

FORWARD:

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

The Dutch striker made the move to England in 1997 when George Graham secured his signature from Boavista. He netted 42 goals in two seasons during his time in Yorkshire and was joint-winner of the Premier League Golden Boot in the 1998/99 campaign. Cardiff would prove to be the last club of Hasselbaink’s career when he joined them in the Championship in August 2007. He scored nine goals in 44 games for the Bluebirds in his final season in football.

FORWARD:

John Charles

Hailed as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Charles began his senior footballing career with Leeds United. “The Gentle Giant” could play as a centre-forward and as a centre-back and from 1949 to 1957, he scored 154 goals in 317 appearances for the Whites. Towards the end of his career, Charles returned to Wales with Cardiff City in 1963 and stayed until he joined Hereford United as player-manager in 1966.He made 72 appearances and scored 18 goals for the Bluebirds.

FORWARD:

Ross McCormack

The Scotsman signed for Cardiff City in the summer of 2008 and went on to score 23 goals in 44 games in his debut season in South Wales. The striker made the move to Leeds ahead of the 2010/11 campaign and spent the next four seasons with the club, playing 158 times and finding the net on 58 occasions in all competitions.
