Leeds United Under-23s will play their final Group E fixture in the Premier League Cup on Monday afternoon, knowing a point will see them progress into the knock-out stages.
The Whites travel to Nottinghamshire where they will play Mansfield Town, at the RH Academy in Mansfield, with the game getting underway in a 1pm kick-off.
This will be the first game in charge for Andy Taylor, who has taken on the lead role for the Under-23s side until the end of the season, after Mark Jackson was promoted into the first team staff at Elland Road.
Both teams can still progress in the competition, with this being the final match for each side in the group. Leeds currently sit in a second place, on seven points from their five games up to now. Mansfield are bottom of the group, but a win on Monday by more than one goal would see them leapfrog both third place Sunderland and Leeds in second, on goal difference.
Group E has already been won by Wigan Athletic, who are top with 13 points. In third place, the Black Cats are out of the competition with just the one win from their six games.
When Leeds met the Stags at York City’s LNER Community Stadium in November, they ran out 2-1 winners courtesy of goals from Sean McGurk and Max Dean. That win was their first of the group, with the second coming away at group leaders Wigan in mid-January.
The cup competition as a whole is split into eight groups of four teams, where each team within the group will play one another home and away. From there, the top two teams will progress into the knockout stages of the competition which are all one-off knockout ties, with extra-time and penalties if needed.
The current holders of the Premier League Cup are Everton, who were crowned champions in 2018/19. For the last two years, the the competition has either been curtailed or hasn’t taken place, due to the pandemic.
