Following the heartbreaking passing of young supporter Ella Lynch, Leeds United Women’s player Paige Williams will be running the Leeds Half Marathon in May in her memory.
The midfielder shared an incredible and lasting bond with Ella, beginning with the pair walking out together ahead of a fixture last summer.
A hugely important and popular figure at Garforth on a matchday, Ella left an unforgettable impression on anyone who was lucky enough to meet her, including the men’s first team squad who she visited at Thorp Arch.
A talented footballer, the 10-year-old was part of the Leeds United Foundation’s Girls Shadow Squad and her incredible bravery in the most difficult times inspired Paige and so many others.
Williams will be fundraising for Candlelighters, who bring light and hope to families touched by childhood cancer in Yorkshire.
Speaking ahead of the challenge, Paige said: “Since building a bond with Ella and her family, I have seen first-hand the impact the charity Candlelighters makes to the lives of children and families going through some of the darkest times.
“Candlelighters have supported Ella and her family, alongside many others in unimaginable ways. They are not just a charity. They are a lifeline, the bright sparks of hope in those darkest days.
“Whether it is emotional, practical or financial support, they provide the right help at the right time. From easing the burden of treatment to creating special moments together, they stand beside families every step of the way.
“No child should face cancer alone and no family should have to navigate this heartbreak without support. Candlelighters stand beside them through every appointment, every sleepless night and every moment of courage.”
Ella’s family will be guests of the club at this weekend’s Emirates FA Cup tie with Norwich City, where fans will be encouraged to join in a round of applause in the 10th minute at Elland Road, as Leeds United remembers one of its own.
Rest in Peace Ella, you were an inspiration and will be missed by so many.
