On opening day of the 2026/27 campaign, Leeds United Under-21s played out a 1-1 with Stoke City Under-21s in the Premier League Cup group stage.

Speaking after the game was captain Ollie Pickles, who said: "First half we should have scored two or three before half time, at least, so a bit gutted going into the second half but we knew we could put them away if we had chances.

"They came out of different shape so it was a bit of a challenge, but still happy with a point, a good start to the season with a clean sheet as well.

"We had so many more chances, more through balls and crosses, which we didn't have in the second half. So I think it's just more of keep doing what we're doing rather than coming off them a bit, coming off the gas.

"We're still a fresh team and new team. We've not played many games together so it's still that bonding time, but we've had a really good pre-season with lot of wins so hopefully this point kicks us on and gets some three points in the season as well."

On Tuesday's National League Cup opener against holders Boreham Wood, the midfielder added: "We are excited. It's going be a different challenge to tonight, but it's one we're all excited for.

"If we get a good first half and second half in that, then hopefully a point or three points even better to start the season in the league, and in the cup as well."
