It was a memorable first Elland Road encounter under the lights for defender Nico Elvedi, who played the full 90 minutes in Leeds United’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.

The win takes the Whites to third place in the Premier League standings after four unbeaten matches, and speaking to the media afterwards, the 29-year-old couldn’t hide his delight.

“It was great. I didn’t expect this great atmosphere. Everyone told me it would be amazing and it was! So, yeah, I am looking forward to the next game here.”

On the action itself, the centre-half was full of praise for his teammates who dominated from the first minute against the Magpies, explaining: “I think it was a very good team performance today. We deserved this win. I think every player can be proud of the performance.

“I think we did a very good game from the start to the end and, yeah, third place, I think a very good start. Our plan was to press one against one. I think we did this very well. We can be really proud of our performance and keep going.

“I think we have had a good pre-season as well and a good start in the league. We have to keep going. We are looking forward to the next game. We have a very good team. I think we can reach a lot this season.”

The Swiss defender’s compatriot Noah Okafor scored the fourth of the evening with a composed finish into the far corner. Having impressed throughout last term and at the start of the new campaign, Elvedi is confident the forward can keep going from strength to strength.

“I love Noah. He is a very good player and very important for us with his speed and quality in the one against one. He did a very good game today. He deserved this goal tonight and he has to keep going.”
