The match officials for Leeds United’s Carabao Cup First Round clash with Middlesbrough on Wednesday have been announced, with Anthony Backhouse set to take charge at Elland Road.

After earning experience officiating in the National League and the Premier League 2, the Cumbria-based referee was handed his EFL debut in 2017, overseeing Coventry City's 3-0 victory over Notts County in League Two.

The tie came months after Backhouse refereed the National League Play-Off Final between Tranmere Rovers and Forest Green Rovers.

Last campaign, he officiated 12 matches in the Championship, dishing out 59 yellow cards and one red card.

Whilst yet to be in the middle of a fixture involving the Whites, Backhouse has taken charge of two Boro matches, both of which came in the Carabao Cup – firstly a penalties victory over Notts County in 2018 before they fell to a 2-0 home defeat against Barnsley in 2020.

2023/24 stats:

Games (all competitions): 23

Yellow cards issued: 103

Red cards issued: 2

Other match officials selected:

Assistant referees: Paul Hodskinson & Mark Dwyer

Fourth official: Martin Woods
