Ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Plymouth Argyle at Elland Road, Ben Scott provides us with a Memory Match against the Devonshire based club.
It comes from March 1987, when The Pilgrims were left well beaten by Billy Bremner’s side as they secured three important points to help them make the play-offs. The visitors arrived at Elland Road with some outside play-off hopes themselves, but losses like this one would confine them to a seventh place and no opportunity at promotion into the top flight.
On the day, opposition boss Dave Smith saw his team well beaten as two fan favourites grabbed the goals for Leeds, in a four-goal thumping. John Sheridan bagged an early penalty and fellow cult hero Ian Baird claimed the match ball with a hat-trick.
Leeds had only lost twice at home since August and boasted an impressive tally of conceding less than a goal a game on home turf.
This encounter was just a mere four minutes old when referee John Lloyd pointed to the spot at the South Stand end of Elland Road, the penalty was given after Mark Aizlewood had put a lovely through ball into the path of Baird on the right as Leeds attacked.
Baird was only just into the penalty area when Plymouth defender Gerry McElhinney chopped Baird down in his stride, then up-stepped Sheridan to cooly send the penalty into the bottom corner of Steve Cherry’s goal.
Leeds kept pressing and probing the Plymouth goal but would have to be patient as the merited second goal wasn't netted until five minutes before the half-time break. If it had not beenfor Cherry making an outstanding save from an Andy Ritchie shot it would have came earlier, but the ‘keeper couldn't foil Baird tucking away a six-yard low shot at the near left post after Ritchie sent him a perfect pass which he could hit first time.
The two-goal lead was the minimum the Whites had deserved, with the hosts showing not just dominance but class in play as they attacked. Leeds had already booked themselves a place in that seasons FA Cup semi-final along with their fine league form, so performances like this didn't shock the on-looking supporters.
After the continuation of dominance in the second half, with 62 minutes played Baird had his second goal and Leeds their third goal to cement their grip on the game.
From the left side, Micky Adams swung a cross into the penalty area and forward John Pearson headed the ball down low to the post furthest from him, then in slid Baird poking home from close range.
With nine minutes left on the clock Baird bagged a delightful bullet header from 10-yards, from a Jackie Ashurst cross on the right. Bremner's side could have had a fifth goal, but Keith Edwards saw his rasping drive fly just over the crossbar.
Plymouth would head back down to Devon empty handed and Leeds would head into the play-offs.
