After two away games in succession, Leeds United will play the host role on Saturday as Watford travel north for the 3pm kick-off at Elland Road.
The Hornets suffered defeat when they last played here by a single goal in October of 2021, losing 1- 0.
With another one goal margin victory, Ben Scott looks at our Memory Match, which was a 2-1 victory on Saturday 18 November 1989, in the second tier.
This would be only the fourth ever fixture between the two clubs.
Howard Wilkinson’s troops had already displayed the credentials needed for gaining promotion – fellow promotion hopefuls like Wolves, Sunderland and Middlesbrough had already left Elland Road empty handed,
Watford arrived in woeful form, eight in the league without a victory – never a statistic you would want to arrive for battle with Leeds. But despite the poor form they still had some highly rated players, including Neil Redfearn in midfield. Neil would later spend a few years at Leeds coaching and as first team manager.
For Wilkinson, the Leeds manager, he would be handing a player a start that they normally wouldn’t get. Goalkeeper Chris Turner made one of his two ever starts as Mervyn Day had picked up an injury in the previous match.
This clash started off as expected, and maybe in terms of chances, even better than Wilkinson and his players could have hoped for.
Early on, Andy Williams raced down the wing latching onto a quick throw-in. He cut the ball back and a double effort at goal was carved out, but firstly a block then an ever so slightly over hit shot fizzed over Tony Coton’s goal.
Soon after, the ‘keeper did look panicked this time as Ian Baird rounded him. Baird sent his first shot off the near post and then when the rebound landed at his feet, he curled the shot agonisingly wide of the other post.
Against the run of play, the visitors had rare possession of the ball and fashioned out an opportunity. Tony Penrice, on his debut, raced in between United’s backline and poked in the game’s first goal with 25 minutes on the clock.
That was to be that before the interval, with the Hornets working hard together and denying Leeds a leveller on plenty of occasions in the first half.
The second half was only a minute old when Leeds, through Gordon Strachan, pinged in a corner. He perfected a textbook training ground move which saw the ball flicked on at the near post to the middle of the six-yard box, where an accurate and brave header from Chris Fairclough levelled matters.
Just six minutes later, it was scenes of utter relief and also bedlam as Andy Williams bagged his second goal of the season - the games winning goal.
Williams had found had his scoring boots, he had got his first of the season in the previous match!
He was on hand after Baird had cleverly fashioned out a low shot across goal after displaying shrewd close ball skills, which was saved by Coton, but Williams like all good players had shown anticipation and it paid off when he was unmarked at the far post and slammed home the winner.
That was the of the scoring and any further chances, but Leeds had got the necessary result, one that went a long way to helping them win the league.
