Mark Jackson has given his thoughts ahead of Wednesday night’s opening Premier League Cup match, when his side take on Wigan Athletic.
This is the first fixture of the competition for both teams, coming at a time with many of the usual Under-23s squad away on international duty.
Jackson has stated the importance of the match to give opportunities to the younger players within the squad, against a tough Wigan side.
“It’s a cup game which will give us a chance to put in a few of the younger players,” Jackson explained.
"We have always had that in our minds going into the competition, that it was a perfect opportunity to have a look at a few of the younger players, and it will be a big test for them.
“That’s what we’re about, testing our players, pushing them and giving them opportunities.
“We’re looking forward to the game against a strong Wigan side, who play good football and have had a lot of success in their Under-18s last year.
“It will be a tough game and one where we can learn a lot about our younger players."
With six games guaranteed in this competition at the group stage, Jackson stated there is an opportunity for the players to impress, whilst keeping a high standard in the team.
He said: “We will only put pressure on ourselves, to have a certain level of expectation on our own performance.
"That goes for every player. Potentially for some of our younger players that are stepping up, it will be the first time they have played for the Under-23s.
“We always place a certain amount of pressure on everyone to perform to our standards and the standard we expect, so from that point of view, there is that expectation from us.
“The lads know how we want them to perform and how to play our style of football. It’s a great chance for the younger players to show what they can do.
“This is another platform to showcase their ability and they are absolutely chomping at the bit to push the Under-23s players and chase them down for their spot.”
