Leeds United’s Jayden Lienou played a key role as Wales U19s claimed a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the United States, following a closely contested 1-1 draw in regular time.
The Young Dragons got off to the ideal start when Wolves forward Makenzie Bradbury opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing off a well-worked move to give Wales early control. The USA grew into the contest, however, and found their equaliser midway through the second half, with Jonathan Shore levelling in the 67th minute.
Lienou, operating at left-back, completed the full 90 minutes and delivered a composed, disciplined performance throughout. The 17-year-old then showed real confidence in the shootout, stepping up to slot home Wales’ second penalty. He coolly chipped the ball straight down the centre as Colorado Rapid's Zackory Campagnolo dived left, making it 2-2 at the time and setting the tone for the remainder of the contest.
With the pressure rising, Wales goalkeeper Logan Stretch produced two superb saves to swing the shootout in his team’s favour. That opened the door for Will Grainger, who made no mistake with the decisive spot-kick to seal a 5-4 victory.
The triumph continues a positive run for Wales U19s, who now look ahead to a challenging test against Germany on Tuesday, with kick-off at 11am (UK time).
