Leeds United sign Nico Elvedi

Experienced international defender joins the club.

NE Signing 1

Leeds United are delighted to announce the signing of Swiss international Nico Elvedi who joins the club in a permanent deal from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The defender becomes our fourth new addition of the summer window and brings a wealth of experience to Daniel Farke’s squad.

Coming through the youth ranks of hometown side FC Zürich, the centre-half made his senior debut in a 2014 meeting with Lausanne-Sport.

After 26 appearances for the club, Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach came calling for the then-teenager's signature, securing the services of the defender prior to the 2015/16 season.

In his debut campaign at Borussia-Park, Nico featured 21 times in the German top-flight and made two appearances in the UEFA Champions League, gaining vital top-level experience at a young age.

That began a glittering service to the North Rhine-Westphalia club that spanned over a decade, in which time he made 364 appearances, scoring 19 goals, and helped the team qualify for European competition on several occasions.

The defender will now reunite with Farke, after working under him at Gladbach in the 2022/23 season. During that campaign, Elvedi made 34 appearances in all competitions and netted three times, including in a 3-1 opening day victory over Hoffenheim.

His 318 appearances in the Bundesliga puts him eighth in terms of all time appearances in the top-flight for Mönchengladbach, and that figure is the most for any non-German player.

Alongside his stellar spell in Germany, the 29-year-old has enjoyed an impressive international career to date, beginning with a 2016 debut against Belgium aged just 19 at the time.

Part of Switzerland’s 2016 European Championships squad, the defender has gone on to travel to every major tournament since with his country, earning 73 caps along the way.

At this summer’s FIFA World Cup, Elvedi played every single minute for his country as the Swiss topped Group B and went on to reach the quarter-finals in North America, their joint-best result in the competition and the first time they have reached the last eight since 1954.

Everyone at Leeds United would like to welcome Nico to the club and we are looking forward to seeing him in action at Elland Road.
