Leeds United recorded the highest ever League Cup Round One attendance on Wednesday evening, with 35,129 supporters turning out for our win over Shrewsbury Town.
There have only ever been two other attendances over the 30,000 mark for a Round One fixture, with the previous highest attendance of 32,314 set back in 1972. Leeds also hold the record for the third best attendance of 30,115, when we hosted Huddersfield Town in 2004.
Almost 250,000 people attended the opening round of fixtures for the Carabao Cup throughout the week, with one tie still to be played, which is a 45% increase compared to last season.
EFL chief executive, Trevor Birch said: “Round One of the Carabao Cup has produced some great games, brilliant goals and shocks results and it’s great to see that fans are attending in such strong numbers to watch the Cup action unfold live.
“This large mid-week turnout follows a record-breaking start to the EFL season with over half a million supporters also enjoying the opening weekend, the highest number this century, which is a testament to the quality on the pitch, atmosphere in the stands and interest in EFL competitions.”
A huge thank you to everyone who attended the match, as always, our fanbase remain as loyal and passionate as ever in supporting the team, whether it’s at Elland Road or on the road away from home.
