Leeds United are proud to play a part in marking Holocaust Memorial Day which takes place every year on January 27.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a key date where we take the time to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people who were killed or suffered under Nazi persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

This year, the club has teamed up with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and other Premier League teams to mark the occasion with the production of a special campaign video.

Midfielder Mateusz Klich has taken part in the filming representing Leeds United alongside other Premier League players, and together they are encouraging people to #LightTheDarkness – a message that accounts for the horror of what happened during the Holocaust and the bravery of those who resisted the darkness.

As part of the special events taking place this year to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, we are asking supporters to show their support by lighting a candle and placing it in your window, safely, at 8pm this evening (Wednesday 27th January).

The Leeds United Academy have also been conducting virtual educational sessions around the important subject with the Education Lead at Thorp Arch, Mitch Cameron, with the Under-14s engaging in online lessons to learn more about the Holocaust and the suffering people endured. The key message being to stand against prejudice always.

As part of this year’s remembrance activity, the Premier League are also focusing on Julius Hirsch who was the first Jewish player to represent Germany at national level, going on to coach the youth team. Julius was deported from Germany to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943 and subsequently killed by the Nazis in 1945.

Please join us this evening, at 8pm, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and remember Julius Hirsch and all of those who were killed and affected by the Holocaust and the genocides – together we stand against hatred of any kind.
