James claims Player of the Match in Wales draw with Ghana

Daniel James Wales June 26 Player of the Match

Leeds United quartet Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Daniel James were all in action for Wales as Craig Bellamy's side secured a dramatic 1-1 draw with Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The friendly appeared to be heading for defeat for the hosts before Liverpool forward Lewis Koumas struck deep into stoppage time, finding the net in the 93rd minute to earn Wales a deserved share of the spoils.

Leeds winger James was one of Wales' standout performers and was named Player of the Match after an impressive display on the right flank.

The 28-year-old proved a constant threat throughout, recording the most touches in the opposition penalty area (nine) and the most shots (four) of any player on the pitch. James also completed 12 accurate passes, made 30 touches and won five duels during an energetic performance.

Reflecting on his display, BBC Sport said: "James was blistering on the right wing, running menacingly at opponents and hitting the woodwork on two separate occasions. First, his header was tipped on to the post by Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and then the Leeds United winger smashed a half-volley against the crossbar, with David Brooks creating both chances."

Behind him, goalkeeper Darlow was called into action on several occasions and played an important role in keeping Wales within touching distance. The Leeds stopper made five saves, six recoveries and five clearances during a busy evening between the posts.

At the heart of the defence, Rodon once again demonstrated his composure and quality in possession. The centre-back registered more touches than any other player on the pitch with 103 and completed an impressive 91 of his 96 passes, achieving a remarkable 95 per cent accuracy rate.

Ampadu also delivered another assured display in midfield. The Leeds captain recorded nine recoveries and four interceptions, while also winning four duels and making two tackles as Wales controlled large spells of the contest.

The four Whites will now turn their attention to Wales' next fixture, with Bellamy's side travelling to face Romania at the Stadionul Steaua on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:45pm BST.
