Slovenia earned a valuable point in their World Cup qualifying campaign after holding Switzerland to a goalless draw in Ljubljana on Monday night, with Leeds United defender Jaka Bijol playing a key role across the full 90 minutes.
The centre-back delivered another composed display at the heart of Slovenia’s defence, making 47 touches and completing 28 passes at an impressive 85% accuracy.
Bijol was heavily involved in keeping Switzerland’s attack at bay, registering 10 defensive contributions - including four interceptions, two clearances, two recoveries and two vital blocks. He also came out on top in two duels while keeping Rennes forward Breel Embolo quiet throughout.
Bijol now returns to Thorp Arch after the international break, having helped Slovenia record back-to-back clean sheets. The 26-year-old featured in Friday night’s goalless draw with Kosovo before playing his part in the latest shutout against Switzerland, keeping Matjaž Kek’s side in contention for a play-off place ahead of next year’s World Cup.
