Leeds United Women secured all three points despite a late fightback from York City Ladies, continuing their FA WNL Division One North title charge with a 4-3 victory.
Speaking afterwards, Simon Wood said: “I thought the first half we were superb. The press that we had worked really well, we caused York problems on multiple occasions, and we were finding different ways in around their backline.
“I think, as a scoreline, we were probably a little bit wasteful, and we could have gone in at half-time a lot more in front than we were.”
York responded after the break, scoring twice in quick succession to put the hosts under pressure, but Wood was pleased with the resilience his players showed to regain control of the contest.
“We had a little bit of panic, and I think over the course of a season, we've spoken to the group about how we're going to get different challenges at times, and maybe that's tonight, where we've had to show a bit of resilience.
“We've had to solve a few problems, and sometimes it doesn't come straight away in football. But then, like I say, a change of shape and the players just calm themselves again, and we got back to doing the things we want to do.”
“Tonight will give us a real good opportunity just to have a look at that game over 90 minutes. Look at when it started to go against us and the tide started to turn a bit, but then look at how we fought back and how we got the game back on our side.
“We're going to learn from this, and the players are going to have a good opportunity to look at it as well.”
The Whites will face Rotherham United Women on Sunday in the FA Cup First Round, a fixture the boss is looking forward to.
“It gives us that opportunity to rotate a little bit and give those players that are working so hard in training the opportunity to start a game and show what they're about, to influence a game.
“So it'll be good in that sense, but we've got to make sure that we're switched on. We go and play like we play, and we go and dominate a game for that period of time.”
“We'll go into Rotherham full of confidence because it's another three points on the board.”
