The Leeds United Supporters’ Trust are urging fans to bring an extra food item to donate to the Leeds United Fans Foodbank which is situated outside the East Stand ahead of home matchdays.
Ahead of our game against Huddersfield Town on Saturday, the collection will start from 10.30am, with volunteers on hand to take generous donations of emergency products from supporters that will help to support vulnerable families and individuals throughout Leeds.
Some of the emergency items that are needed include tinned tomatoes and tinned fruit, cooking sauces, biscuits, juice, tea and coffee, UHT milk, custard, and hygiene products.
Karen Burgon, from Leeds North and West Foodbank, said: “We’d like to thank Leeds United fans for their continued support, whether that’s physical product, cash or online donations – it makes a massive difference. Since we started the Leeds Fans Foodbank in 2018, it’s enabled us to create over 20,000 meals for families in need. This year remains a very challenging year for many people across Leeds with 9 in 10 low-income households going without the essentials.
“Whilst we don’t believe that people should have to turn to charity to feed their families, this is the stark reality for many in our own community. Many families are having to do so as the current levels of support doesn’t even help to cover the essentials. Until this changes then we will continue to need the generous support of the fans and we really appreciate their continued efforts to make sure struggling families in our city get the support they need.
We are also calling on fans to help support us in signing our petition to ensure Universal Credit protects people from going without essentials – you can sign here.“
There is an expected surge in demand for food parcels as we head into the winter months, so if match goers are able to bring even one item along with them, that really will help. We want to ensure that no family has to make the incredibly difficult decision between eating and heating – a decision no-one should have to make.
