This summer, the Leeds United Foundation, in partnership with Jet2, the University of Leeds, local MPs and community partners, proudly welcomed a group of young footballers from Ukraine to the UK for a unique cultural and sporting exchange programme.

For these young people, the visit was about far more than football. Many had grown up in communities affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, facing uncertainty, disruption to education, separation from loved ones and limited opportunities to enjoy experiences that many young people take for granted. Through sport, friendship and cultural exchange, the project offered a chance to create positive memories, build confidence and provide a temporary escape from the challenges of everyday life.

Football has a unique ability to bring people together regardless of background, language or circumstance. The visit allowed the Ukrainian players to experience life in the UK, meet new friends, learn about British culture and take part in activities that promoted teamwork and wellbeing. It also provided an opportunity for young people in Leeds to learn about the experiences, strength and determination of their Ukrainian counterparts.

A key highlight of the visit was a match between the Ukraine Under-15s team and a Leeds United Foundation team on 5 August, creating a memorable sporting occasion that celebrated friendship, inclusion and international solidarity. The game demonstrated the power of football to unite communities and show support for young people living through difficult circumstances.

Alongside the football activities, the visit aimed to leave a lasting legacy by building relationships between organisations, communities and young people from both countries. Through the support of partners including Jet2 and the University of Leeds, the project showcased how sport, education and community organisations could work together to create meaningful social impact.

At its heart, the initiative was about giving young people hope, opportunity and a sense of belonging. For the Ukrainian players, the trip provided a chance to enjoy new experiences, develop life skills and create memories that would stay with them long after they returned home. For everyone involved, it was a reminder of the positive role that sport could play in bringing people together and supporting young people through challenging times.
