The Leeds United Foundation hosted a special event recently bringing together two programmes, the Corner Flag Dementia Cafe and Premier League Primary Stars (PLPS), with special appearances from Leeds United Women duo Emma Lee and Rebecca Hunt.
Coaches from the club’s official charity have been working with young students from Morely Newlands Academy as part of the PLPS initiative, helping to deliver a range of educational and sport sessions on a weekly basis.
The programme uses the power of sport to inspire and engage youngsters in their school work, encouraging them to develop a number of different skills, including their confidence, leadership, motivation and many more.
During the visit to the monthly Corner Flag Cafe, the pupils introduced themselves and then organised a fun, competitive and educational game for everyone which was centred around spelling and creating words.
Emma Lee and Rebecca Hunt along with the teachers and young pupils split themselves across a number of tables to help work with the Corner Flag participants that are suffering with early onset dementia, with each table competing to see who could make the most words or the longest words.
Midfielder for Leeds United Women FC, Emma Lee, said: "From talking to the children and members of staff during the visit it sounds like the whole Primary Stars programme has been brilliant for them. It's been great to see them at Elland Road today and they've all done a really good job, setting up a really fun activity and everyone has enjoyed it.
"Even before the activity started the kids were mingling on the tables, speaking to the people that come along to the Corner Flag Cafe and there was a really good vibe with lots of good conversations so it's been brilliant for everybody involved."
