Leeds United exited the FA Youth Cup following a fifth round defeat away at Oxford United.
Leeds started the game brightly and had the first chance inside 10 minutes, Ben Andreucci picked out Connor Douglas in the Oxford box, but he couldn’t keep his volley down.
It was the hosts who took the lead 10 minutes later though, after Gaitlin O’Donkor had seen his shot deflect wide for a corner, Leeds goalkeeper Darryl Ombang couldn’t gather the cross and Enrique Tiamuna was on hand to convert from close range.
O’Donkor again threatened, turning well on the edge of the box once more, but this time he was denied by Leeds stopper Ombang, who made a good save.
Leeds had a good opportunity to hit back when Cian Coleman puts a good ball into the Oxford box, but Connor Douglas who was well placed, could only scuff his effort off target.
With five minutes of the first half remaining, Josh Johnson tried his luck from 30 yards and his attempt rattled the crossbar.
Johnson’s strike proved to be the warning as less than a minute later the hosts doubled their lead. O’Donkor showed good strength to get in behind Scott Godden and he made no mistake once through on goal.
Leeds almost pulled a goal back when Cuba Diboe found Andreucci with a cross, with the forward pulling his volley just past the post.
Deep into stoppage time, O’Donkor again threatened with a shot on the turn, but he couldn’t keep his strike down, as the hosts went in at the break with the ascendancy.
Half time: Oxford United 2-0 Leeds United
Things went from bad to worse for the Whites after the break. Aidan Elliott-Wheeler was only denied from range by a fine stop and from the resulting corner, O’Donkor again showed good strength, to hold off Jay Buchan, before finding the back of the net.
Leeds went close from a corner just before the hour mark, with Oxford defender Tobias Brennan almost turning into his own goal, but it went just over.
Johnson again threatened from range for the hosts, seeing a strike saved, before Leeds substitute Luca Thomas saw a free kick deflect over.
Douglas then saw a strike blocked for the Whites after being teed up by Andreucci, whilst Marley Wilson fired over from 25 yards as Leeds continued to look for a route back into the game.
The hosts nearly made it four, twice through Elliott-Wheeler. First he fired a volley just inches wide after latching onto a cross well, before being teed up by Josh Iheanacho and being denied by Ombang.
Douglas fired a volley over late on for Leeds after meeting a Jay Buchan cross, whilst Thomas saw a free kick well saved, as the Whites bowed out of the competition.
